Walnuts: Lowering Cholesterol And More!
The next time you are in the grocery store, looking for those items to fill Christmas recipes, pick up some walnuts. They have been associated with better heart and brain health and now researchers at Yale University have more to add. Men and women who were at above average risk of developing diabetes ate two ounces of walnuts a day for six months, and were monitored for 3-15 months. When the results were in, their diets were better in quality, and the LDL (bad cholesterol) levels were lower.
Walnuts contain a component called Ellagitannins which could be an attractive element for cancer treatment. Researchers at San Jose State University used it to create an extract for treating aggressive breast cancer in mice, and the tumors got smaller!
