Contagious Cancers Found in Tasmanian Devils
Tasmanian Devils have recently been noted to have not one, but two contagious cancers plaguing their population.
Known as DFT1 and DFT2, these cancers were both discovered to have different major histocompatability complex (MHC) genotypes. MHC’s function inn the mammalian body to detect diseased or foreign cells like cancer.
Reseatrch is now focusing on a vaccine for DFT1, which has decimated 90% of the devils population and scientist hope it may indeed work for DFT2 as well.
